January Wrap-Up

How on earth is it already February 1st? I don’t understand where January went.  I blinked and missed it completely. Somehow though, I managed to stay on top of my 2016 goals. Crazy!

On New Years Eve I made a list of 10 goals for 2016. They were a mix of physical goals (fitness, running, etc), house related (cleaning. UGH!), family (finding balance, do more fun/new things!) and personal (drink more water, Read 26 books). I also signed up for 2 sewing challenges, “Sew Your Stash” and “100 Item Sewing Challenge.” All of this sounds like a lot, but I need the push and I’m a pretty huge competitor with myself. It’s a blessing and a curse!

Starting off with sewing, I don’t think I made it through much of my stash. Actually, I added to it. Lots. Oops! I did manage to make a few things with fabrics I had set aside for specific projects. So, score, right? I’m finding the 100 Item Sewing Challenge to be a great motivator. You need to make at least 8 items a month and upload them to the group. It’s great! If you don’t, you risk being removed. Talk about motivation! I knocked out 13 items and even managed the first for February’s count today! Woo! While some were doubles (okay, triples!), it’s actually really nice to see my progress. I’m doing this with a friend and I love seeing all she’s doing too. She sews for fun and she’s making some pretty fantastic stuff. She made this amazing Llama pillow that really is the most wonderful thing of 2016. He’s so sassy and fierce. You can see him here, along with all her other amazing creations!

Out of my 10 2016 goals, I can definitely say that 1 is out… my ‘walk 70 000 steps every week’ hasn’t happened. It’s cold, I’m not running as often and I’m focusing on a weight training program… so that goal will have to wait until March. Aside from that one,  things are staying on track. Goal number 6 was to try something new each month with the boys. Earlier in January we made our way over to the Trampoline Park and after a ridiculous Henry melt down that started at the air sealing doors, we had a great time! Henry LOVED jumping and cautiously climbing into the block pit while Jayne loved following my friend Mary-Lou around looking for snuggles. We’ll have to see what February brings, maybe some family skating or a week straight of both sleeping through the night and getting up after 7am (ha ha ha)!


I think the goal I’ve been doing the best with has been reading. It’s kind of crazy. In January alone I read more books than all of 2015. It’s like I opened the floodgates and now can’t get enough. I just want to devour books. I have always been a fast reader and this month has shown I have not slowed down. I read all books this month within 3 days and most in only a day or two tops (well, technically the last book I read I started back in the fall, read 100 pages, wasn’t interested and put it down. I finished it this past week in one sitting just because I had to. Still didn’t love it). Here are the five books I read, and yes, in order of how much I loved them!

5. Where’d You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple

Last night I even managed to start on my 6th book of the year – “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (and other concerns)” by Mindy Kaling. So far, awesome! If you have any book suggestions, I’d love to hear them!

And finally, goal number1 (on the list, in no particular order) was to complete two workout programs, specifically, 21 Day Fix Extreme and Hammer & Chisel. Fix Extreme went great! Finished it up and nervously jumped into Hammer & Chisel. I loved Fix Extreme and was caution to start something new. I wanted to stick with Extreme as I was loving the weights and how strong I was getting. Well, let me tell you… Fix Extreme has NOTHING on Hammer & Chisel. H&C is a glorious new love in my life. After 2 weeks I am already significantly increasing my weights and noticing some pretty massive changes. Bring on the next 6 weeks! Woot!

All in all, I’d say it has been a pretty great start to the year of crushing my goals! Still can’t believe how quickly January flew by, but now that I’m tracking more of what I do, it’s a nice reminder that I’m staying productive. Weirdly enough, I’ve also managed to relax a lot this past month (woot woot for goal number 9 – work on my work/life/family balance!). Dahl and I went to see Star Wars at the start of January, we’ve watched more TV at home together (we’re so close to finishing Jessica Jones) and we’ve even stayed caught up (all 2 episodes!) with the new X-Files. This is a pretty  big deal for us. We don’t sit and watch tv/movies together very much anymore. This year, I’d like to change that!  Let’s see what February has in store!
